WHERE TO FLY INTO ICELAND

Keflavik International Airport

Flying to Iceland typically means landing at Keflavik International Airport. This is the main airport just a short drive from Reykjavik.

If your flight arrives in the morning, you can start your road trip immediately. If your flight arrives in the afternoon (ours did), consider staying at a nearby hotel for the night. We stayed at the Konvin Airport Hotel.

ICELAND TRAVEL ITINERARY BY DAY - THE LONG VERSION

DAY 1:

RV Rental - Reykjavik

Starting in Reykjavik, we kicked off our Iceland road trip by picking up our RV from Indie Campers. However, there are plenty of other options for RV and camper van rentals in Iceland. Some other companies to consider include: Happy Campers, Kuku Campervan Iceland, Go Campers Iceland, and Campervan Iceland.

If we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit again one day, we will likely book with one of these other companies. We just strongly suggest researching camper van companies in Iceland and looking at reviews to make sure are booking with a company you will like :)

Groceries - Reykjavik

Before hitting the road, we made a brief stop at the Kronan grocery store in Reykjavik to stock up on snacks and easy meals.

Hygge Coffee & Micro Bakery - Reykjavik

For a quick breakfast and coffee to go, we recommend stopping at Hygge Coffee and Micro Bakery

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss

Our first major stop of the trip was Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a stunning waterfall that cascades 200 feet down a cliff. Parking at this stop is just a short walk away from the waterfall itself, so you don't need to worry about a super intense hike. However, you will want some waterproof gear. As you follow the trail, it will lead you behind the waterfall and the mist here is quite heavy. If you are concerned with what to pack, we have included a full list of what we wore at the bottom of this post.

Gljúfrabúi

A hidden waterfall?! Gljúfrabúi is located within walking distance from Seljalandsfoss, so make sure you don’t leave without stopping here. Continue along the path going past Seljalandsfoss and you will eventually reach a canyon that opens up to a hidden waterfall — this is Gljúfrabúi. As you walk in and out, be cautious of your step because the stream flows directly along the pathway.

Skógafoss

Our third stop was arguably my favorite waterfall — Skógafoss. This is one of the most incredible waterfalls I’ve ever seen, standing at 197 feet tall and 82 feet wide and making it one of the best waterfalls in Iceland (in my opinion). Depending on the season you are visiting, there may be a large field of lupines blooming along the roadside in front of the waterfall. We visited in mid-June and the lupines were absolutely *stunning* at this time.

Tip: We recommend stopping at the Seljalandsfoss Gift Shop to check out their puffin merchandise :)

Kvernufoss

We are gonna call this one “the one we missed.” This location was on our itinerary for day 1, but we had spent so long at our other stops and simply overlooked this amazing waterfall. It’s located in the same area as Skógafoss so if you are already stopping there, you might as well add this to your list.

Vik Campground

Located in Iceland’s southernmost village, Vik, the campground offers: electricity, toilets, showers, WiFi and dining facilities. For the most up to date information, visit their website here.

DAY 2:

Skool Beans Cafe in Vík

Located directly next to the Vík campground, this charming cafe is the perfect way to start your day. We loved the coffee and breakfast bagels, but we saw a few people ordering the hot cocoa and it also looked amazing.

Dyrhólaey

If your morning coffee didn’t wake you up… then, the wind here surely will. So make sure to pack some warm layers for this stop. Dyrhólaey is a fantastic spot for breathtaking coastal views in Iceland, dramatic cliffs, and—yes, puffins! That’s right — you can see puffins at this location from April to August, with the peak viewing times typically occurring in June and July. Puffins spend most of their lives at sea, but during this period they nest along Iceland’s cliffs.

Please note: Dyrhólaey has clear barriers to indicate where the path lies; however, if you are visiting other puffin nesting locations in Iceland, you will need to proceed with caution and stay on trails. Puffin burrows are shallow and the ground can collapse.

Reynisfjara Beach

This is the beach that is known for being Iceland’s “most dangerous.” So while visiting, please be cautious as the beach is notorious for having sneaker waves that surge unexpectedly. However, this is a beautiful beach to visit for those hoping to see Iceland’s black sand beaches and striking basalt columns.

Lunch at Black Crust Pizzeria

After exploring the beach, we stopped for lunch at Black Crust Pizzeria in Vík. We highly recommend stopping here.

Tip:

Looking for where to see Icelandic horses? As you leave the town of Vík heading towards your next destination, Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, keep your eyes peeled for these beautiful animals. We were able to spot them here on our journey.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

With a trail thats just under 2 miles in length, Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon is an easy hike to add to your itinerary.

Múlagljúfur Canyon

If there is one thing I would NOT miss on a trip to Iceland, its Múlagljúfur Canyon. This is one of those places that has to be experienced for you to truly understand. To reach the trailhead for this hike, you will drive along a gravel road for about 3 miles. The hike begins directly from the parking area and the trail is pretty clearly marked. However, we always recommend downloading an offline map from AllTrails to be well prepared. We took full use of the Iceland’s longer daylight hours (in June) and started this hike around 7:40 PM. One of the advantages to starting the hike later in the day was that we encountered only a few hikers heading out, allowing us to enjoy the viewpoints entirely to ourselves.

While visiting this area, please always follow Leave No Trace guidelines and stick to the trails to help preserve the location’s natural beauty. Many popular scenic areas in Iceland are clearly marked with barriers to protect and preserve these natural spaces from the damage that can occur from heavy foot traffic. Múlagljúfur Canyon lacks barriers to protect its fragile vegetation from trampling, so it's crucial to stay on designated trails <3

Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon is a popular stop on most Iceland travel itineraries; however, we had not planned to stop there… until we drove by. It’s truly remarkable how blue the icebergs in this lagoon are! Should we visit Iceland again in the future, I believe taking a tour in this area could be an incredible opportunity.

Höfn Campground

We ended our day camping at Camping Höfn. The campground offers electrical hook-ups for RVs, bathrooms, and showers.

DAY 3:

Vestrahorn and Stokksnes Beach

We began our third day at Vestrahorn, a dramatic mountain that rises from the black sands of Stokksnes Beach. This is one of those places that I think would look exceptionally beautiful with some snow capping the mountain tops. So, I would love to visit again in the colder months.

Djupivogurfood

We stopped in the town of Djupivogur for lunch at Djupivogurfood and had delicious Icelandic hotdogs with fried onion.

Sveinstekksfoss

The drive from Vestrahorn to our next destination, Hengifoss (below), was about 4 hours. So, if you are also following this route, consider stopping at Sveinstekksfoss waterfall to help break up the trip and stretch your legs.

Hengifoss

Hengifoss, one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, is known for the striking red soil layers in the cliff surrounding the waterfall. Photos of this breathtaking spot made it a top destination for Kyle on our trip. Unfortunatelyyy, we did not end up making it to this destination due to difficulties with the RV and as a result, we can’t share much about the waterfall itself :/

What we can share is that the route to Hengifoss involves a long stretch of gravel road. Along the way, we stopped to help a couple with a flat tire, and shortly after, we encountered our own issues. The RV’s skid plate lost a bolt, causing it to drag on the road and forcing us to pull over to find a solution. So, I’d just recommend driving cautiously in this area.

Egilsstaðir - Skipalækur Campground

This campground offers: Electricity for RV’s, bathrooms and showers. For the most up to date information, visit their website here.

Askur Pizzeria

We ended our day at Askur Pizzeria in Egilsstaðir.

DAY 4:

Stuðlagil Canyon

Planning an Iceland road trip itinerary? We’ve created this Iceland travel guide to help you discover the best attractions along the Ring Road while providing tips to make the most of your journey — Read more on our blog: kandk-travel.com

Stuðlagil Canyon

After getting the RV into a shop and all fixed up, we started our fourth day at Stuðlagil Canyon. Stuðlagil is known for the vibrant river water that flows through and the basalt columns that form the walls of the canyon. This is a beautiful area for photography, but just note that heavy rain can impact the color of the water. To reach the canyon, you will have to hike for roughly 2.5-3 miles depending on how far you choose to go.

Its also worth noting that the road to reach the parking area here was the roughest section of road we dealt with during our time in Iceland. It was quite bumpy, muddy, and was sectioned off due to construction. However, we didn’t have any difficulties getting through and there were plenty of vehicles and other RV’s coming and going… just drive cautiously!

Dettifoss

Next, we visited Dettifoss, one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls. The sheer force of the water here is insane.

Námafjall Hverir and Viti Crater

Planning an Iceland road trip itinerary? We’ve created this Iceland travel guide to help you discover the best attractions along the Ring Road while providing tips to make the most of your journey — Read more on our blog: kandk-travel.com

Námafjall Hverir and Viti Crater are both part of Krafla volcanic system in northeastern Iceland and located just 15-20 minutes apart.

The landscape at Námafjall Hverir looks a bit like stepping onto mars while Viti crater is a stunning geothermal lake with gatorade blue waters. Overall, this is just an area with really unique landscapes.

Mylla Restaurant - Reykjahlíð

If you are looking for some warm soup after several cold days in Iceland, Mylla Restaurant in Reykjahlíð offers an amazing tomato soup. But, the menu prices here were much higher than at most other restaurants we visited during this trip.

GeoSea - Geothermal Sea Baths

Midnight sun… coastal mountains… and a geothermal sea bath?! Geosea was a great way to relax and watch the sunset to end the day. Read more or book here.

Husavik Campground

The campground offers: Electricity for RV’s, bathrooms and showers. You can read more here.

DAY 5:

Tjornes Peninsula

Tjornes Peninsula

For those of you looking to see puffins once more, Tjornes Peninsula is a great spot to add to your list of stops. In terms of photography, Kyle and I found it easier to capture closer shots of puffins on the cliffs here (compared to Dyrhólaey). Therefore, we preferred this location.

Goðafoss

Next, we visited Goðafoss, known as the “Waterfall of the Gods.”

Hraunsnef Hotel Restaurant

We stopped at Hraunsnef hotel restaurant for dinner and YUM… they had delicious brie burgers.

Kirkjufellsfoss

We ended our day at Kirkjufellsfoss. With the backdrop of Kirkjufell mountain, this is yet another easy to access (felt like a 2 second walk) and beautiful waterfall.

Grundarfjörður Campground

Grundarfjörður Campground is just under 6 miles away (~10-15 minute drive) so this is the perfect spot to park and camp for the night. The campground offers electrical hook-ups for RVs, bathrooms and showers.

Kirkjufellsfoss

DAY 6:

Snæfellsjökull National Park

We started our morning by visiting a section of Snæfellsjökull National Park. These landscape here is full of beautiful coastlines and lava fields. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the best weather here so we decided it was best to move on.

Stapinn Cafe

Another stop with a great brie burger. Can you tell that I love a good brie burger? ;)

Bjarnarfoss

Bjarnarfoss was our last little, “outdoorsy” stop of the trip before heading back to Reykjavik. It’s located directly along the route to Reykjavik, so it’s an easy location to add if you aren’t ready to say goodbye to Iceland.

Blue Lagoon

As one of Iceland’s most famous geothermal spas, you’ve likely heard of the Blue Lagoon. The milky blue waters and surrounding lava fields make it an exceptionally popular location amongst tourists. We loveddddd our time here. But if you prefer solitude, this may not be the best option for you. You can book here.

Camping at Reykjavik Eco Camp

This campground offers: Electricity for RV’s, bathrooms and showers. For the most up to date information, visit their website here.

DAY 7:

Drop off RV - Reykjavik

On day 7 we dropped off the RV with Indie Campers.

WHAT WE WORE

We received lots of questions about what we wore on our trip to Iceland, so we have outlined a few of the basics below. While we have linked most of the exact products we used, some gear has been in our collection for years. In those cases, we've provided links to similar items from the same brand. Additionally, its important to note that our trip to Iceland was in Summer, specifically mid-June. You should check the weather forecasts ahead of your trip and modify your packing list accordingly :)
